Ingredients (Serves 8–10)

For the Base

  • 1 ½ cups All-purpose flour
  • ½ cup Butter, softened
  • ¼ cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract

For the Custard

  • 2 cups Milk
  • ½ cup Sugar
  • 3 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 3 Egg yolks
  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • Pinch of Salt

For the Topping

  • 1 cup Whipped cream or optional powdered sugar

Instructions

1. Make the base

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, butter, sugar, and vanilla until crumbly.
  3. Press evenly into a greased 8×8 inch baking pan.
  4. Bake for 15–18 minutes, until lightly golden. Let cool.

2. Prepare the custard

  1. In a saucepan, heat milk over medium heat until warm.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth.
  3. Slowly pour warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking.
  4. Return mixture to the saucepan and cook on low-medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

3. Assemble

  • Pour custard over the cooled base and smooth the top.
  • Chill in the refrigerator for 2–3 hours to set.

4. Add topping

  • Spread whipped cream or dust powdered sugar on top before serving.
  • Cut into squares and serve chilled.

  • For extra flavor, sprinkle a little Nutmeg or Cinnamon on top.
  • Use shortbread or graham cracker crust for a slightly different texture.
  • Custard can be flavored with almond extract instead of vanilla for a variation.
